Llantwit concert raises £4,200 for Médecins Sans Frontières

A CONCERT in St Illtud’s Church, Llantwit Major, raised more than £4,200 for Médecins Sans Frontières for the medical charity to continue its work in Gaza.

Organiser Sheree Conibear, of the Barry Ceasefire Group said the event prompted an “overwhelming flood of love and kindness” for the children of Gaza.

Pianist Elizabeth Elliott and cellist Andrew Elliott performed at the event.

She said: “It was incredibly moving. As well as the incredible amount of money raised, we were overwhelmed by the amount of support, love and kindness we received. More than 200 people came to the church and all of them wanted to do what they could to ease the terrible suffering in Gaza.”

The event included Palestinian food, a bazaar, music, art and poetry. Among the people who attended the event was Kanishka Narayan, MP for the Vale. He was asked to use whatever influence he had to stop arms sales to Israel. Sheree claimed: “We are aware that the UK is still manufacturing and exporting weapon parts and sent a trade envoy to Israel five days after claiming to suspend trade talks.”

Members of the Barry Ceasefire Group have held weekly vigils calling first on Alun Cairns, the former Vale MP, and now Mr Narayan to use their voices to halt the “escalating atrocities now being carried out by Israel”.

Sheree said: “Thousands of innocent children have been killed, burned and maimed. We cannot look away. Thank you to everybody who did what they could by supporting our event in St Illtud’s Church, and thank you to the rector, Edwin Counsell, for allowing us to use his beautiful church and for all his help”.
