Local Miss Wales finalist launches loneliness campaign
A MISS WALES finalist from Llantwit Major, Hope Shakespeare, announced the launch of a new student wellbeing campaign designed to address the growing issue of loneliness among young people in education.

The initiative aims to raise awareness, foster community connections, and empower students to seek support without stigma.
Loneliness has become a significant concern in Wales, with 13% of people reporting feeling lonely – a figure that has remained unchanged since 2021. Among young adults aged 16–24, the rate is even higher, and the impact on mental health and wellbeing is profound.
As a student in south Wales, Hope’s campaign is personal. She said: “Since moving to university, I’ve struggled tremendously with loneliness. It affects you mentally and emotionally and makes you question yourself. I want other young people to know they are not alone and that support is out there.”
The RISE campaign is built around four key aims:
1/ Raise public awareness of student loneliness.
2/ Initiate open conversations in schools and universities.
3/ Support connection through social events and peer clubs.
4/ Empower students to recognise and respond to loneliness
Hope is passionate about using her Miss Wales platform to creat e positive change for students across Wales. “RISE is about community, connection and courage,” she said. “If just one student feels less alone because of this campaign, it will have been worthwhile.”
