When the missionaries arrived to clean up Barry
THERE will be a history talk in St Mary’s Church, Holton Road, Barry, by Nic Hodges on Friday, 17th May, 7.30pm to 9pm.
Mr Hodges will be describing how, in the 1880s, Christian missionaries arrived in Barry. They established their churches in tents and delivered sermons in open fields. The aim was to address the issues of drunkenness and immorality in the town.

Come and listen to captivating stories of Barry and how the town evolved, with scandals that shocked and appalled our ancestors. Entrance is £5 on the door and proceeds go to St Mary Ministry Area. A fun evening about Barry’s past is promised.
