A 24-YEAR-OLD man from Cadoxton with a series of previous convictions for shoplifting has been issued with a three-year Criminal Behaviour Order (CBO).
Joshua Smith, has been involved in multiple incidents of theft from local stores in the Barry area and, following a recent conviction for three thefts and one attempt theft, the prolific thief was handed a three-year CBO at Cardiff Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, 4th February.

A spokesperson for South Wales Police (SWP) said: “He regularly enters premises with no intention of buying any goods and officers have witnessed him become confrontational and aggressive when challenged.
“The court heard the CBO was necessary to prevent crime and to protect the community, local workers, and members of the public from continued distress, disruption, and potential harm.”
As part of the CBO, Smith is banned from the town’s Asda, Morrisons, and Iceland and the One Stop Shop in Broad Street.
Also banned from Holton Road
The order also prevents him from entering Holton Road, except for pre-arranged medical or support service appointments.
He is also banned from a number of housing provider properties – Junction House in Hood Road, Ellis Fisher in Broad Street and Ty’r Gyfraith in Greenwood Street.
PC Adrian Muscat, Anti-Social Behaviour Co-ordinator at SWP, said: “South Wales Police works closely with retailers and businesses to protect them from crime and anti-social committed by individuals like Joshua Smith.
“Shoplifting can have a devastating impact on shopworkers and retailers.
“This case demonstrates our commitment to tackling retail theft and supporting the industry.”
This is the latest success for SWP following a new wider approach to shoplifting in Cardiff and The Vale.

The police spokesperson added: “Officers have been meeting with retailers and businesses to improve information and intelligence sharing as well as arresting prolific offenders and those who profit from retail theft.
“The approach was put in place as a response to rising retail theft and to improve trust and confidence within our business communities.”
