BOTH Sully Centurions Cricket Club teams recorded victories for the third week in a row.
The First XI fielded first at Burnham Avenue against Cardiff, where Elis and Rhydian Sheppard got the visitors off to a flyer. They had reached 70 when Nick Jones took the first of three wickets, having Elis caught by Shae Ellis for 26. Jones struck again a few overs later, when Thrikawala went for just four.
After Rhydian Sheppard had reached 50, he became Jones’ third victim with the score on 125. Lloyd Bruce got in on the act when he dismissed Barnett for a well-made 56. However, although wickets began falling at regular intervals, Cardiff continued to pile up the runs – eventually finishing on 254-9. Bruce, with 4-53 and Nick Jones (3-37) were the pick of the Sully bowlers.
After tea, the Centurions run chase got off to a good start, with skipper Ricki Griffett and Kieron Ferriday sharing an opening stand of 61, before Ferriday fell for 19. Then, in a similar fashion to the visitors’ innings, Sully lost the second wicket shortly after when Ricki went for 23. Shae Ellis dug in and was soon in the runs. He shared an 87-run partnership with Lloyd Bruce (39) followed by a 51-run stand with Tom Davies (28) before adding another 25 with Gabe Howard, to see Centurions home for the loss of just five wickets. Shae ended on a fine 82 not out. For the visitors, Roderick (3-45) took the majority of the bowling plaudits.

Meanwhile the Second XI travelled to Radyr in an attempt to secure promotion back to Division 7, having been relegated last year. But a disastrous start, with skipper Zia Gehlan departing for a duck, threatened to derail the promotion party. But Jeevan and Sonu put their heads together and began steadying the ship and the runs began to flow. Jeevan’s 25 and Sonu’s 82, followed by Basil John’s 75, put the innings back on track.
Rhett Jones also hit a half century, along with 25 from Shan Rehman, which pushed the score upwards. A final flourish from Kapil (34 not out) and Imran (10 not out) left Centurions on 334-6 at the close of the innings. Gardner and Gould, with two wickets each, were the best of the Radyr bowlers.
In reply, the home side hardly got out of the traps, as wickets began tumbling. Amrik Singh tore through the home batting line up, ending up with a marvellous 5-21. He was ably supported by Shan Rehman (3-45). The Radyr innings collapsed to 84 all out in the 19th over. Only three batsmen got into double figures, with Gould top scoring on 17. So promotion is secured, with two games left to secure the championship. A victory next week should do the trick.
