Tree Planting ceremonies at Merthyr Dyfan Cemetery
Barry Town Council is pleased to announce that yesterday, Tuesday 8th March two tree planting ceremonies took place at Merthyr Dyfan Cemetery.
The first of the ceremonies marked 100 years of Soroptimist International and saw members of Barry & District Soroptimists, along with representatives from Barry Town Council including Barry Town Mayor Cllr. Steffan Wiliam, Cllr Nic Hodges (Chair of the Halls, Cemeteries & Facilities Committee), Amanda Evans (Facilities & Cemeteries Manager) and Paul Duggan (Cemetery Team Leader) gather to plant a Mountain Ash Tree at Merthyr Dyfan Cemetery, Barry.
President Val Simpson said, “It is particularly appropriate that we are planting our tree on International Women’s Day since we are a voluntary organisation which aims to educate, empower and enable women and girls to achieve their full potential.
“During our Centenary Soroptimists have planted trees throughout the world in countries such as Peru, Brazil, Spain, France, Mozambique, India and of course Wales.
“These will not only be a lasting tribute to our Organisation but also assist in enhancing our environment at a time when we are all conscious of the need to address the issue of climate change.”
The second of the ceremonies was to celebrate the planting of 135 trees at Merthyr Dyfan Cemetery.
In November 2021, on Tree Charter Day, The Woodland trust offered their Charter Branches free trees to plant with the idea being that the Trust would like to encourage as many communities as possible to plant trees together – no matter how many or how few – #EveryTreeCounts!
A spokesperson for Barry Town Council said, “Town and Community Councils are at the heart of communities and as a Charter Branch standing up for woods and trees in the community.
“The trees planted are all native broadleaf trees, and include Silver birch, Rowan, Wild Cherry, Hazel, Crab Apple, Downy Birch, Hawthorn and Goat Willow.
“Barry Town Council are proud to lead in taking action at this time of climate crisis.
“Merthyr Dyfan Cemetery is a Green Flag awarded green space and as such, the trees will make a beautiful addition to the landscape.”
