POLICE in the Vale have seen an increase in vehicle crime, including stolen vehicles, during January and February. Although Penarth and the Vale have been affected, the Barry area has been heavily targeted.
Vehicle crime in the Vale of Glamorgan typically includes offenses like theft of or from a vehicle, vandalism, and other related incidents.
Neighbourhood Policing Inspector Gareth Childs said: “Officers have made some arrests in connection with this recent spate in vehicle crime and are continuing to investigate. Sadly, we have identified that most of the crimes reported to us have happened to be parked unattended insecure vehicles.”
The most stolen vehicles last month were Fords, Land Rovers and Volkswagen. Fiesta, Transit and Ecosport were the most targeted Ford models.
A South Wales Police (SWP) spokesperson said: “Being a victim of car crime is upsetting, costly and an inconvenience. It’s particularly distressing when you are a repeat victim. Please be reassured that officers are doing everything possible to identify further perpetrators and are regularly patrolling hotspot areas.”
SWP have been provided advice to vehicle owners, like locking doors and not leaving valuables in plain sight, hinting at ongoing issues.
Some tips to help prevent vehicle crime
- Check your vehicle daily.
- Check vehicle is secure before leaving.
- Remove items of value.
- Where possible, park in a well-lit area and covered by CCTV as this can deter thieves and also help detect crime.
- Make a note of the location using the What 3 Words app.
