Llantwit and St Athan women sign up to fundraise for Velindre

THREE Vale woman have signed up to do a six-day trek through isolated terrain in Patagonia, to raise funds for Velindre Cancer Centre.

Mother and daughter Lisa and Mia Morgan from Llantwit Major, and Marion Williams from St Athan were determined to help Velindre after a personal brush with cancer. They are paying all their transport costs so it means that all the money they raise will go to Velindre.

In April 2020, Lisa and her brother Mal were both diagnosed with lung cancer and had treatment at Velindre. Lisa said: “Whilst I count my blessings everyday and am eternally grateful to the amazing teams at Llandough, The Heath and Velindre Hospitals for saving my life. Heartbreakingly, Mal lost his long battle last year.

“Having experienced the wonderful and crucial work of Velindre first hand, we are determined to raise as much as possible in memory of family and friends and to support those that have also had a cancer diagnosis and are going through treatment.

Prior to taking up the challenge in two years time, the trio will hold fundraising events over the coming months.

Marion said ” I’ve committed to the Patagonia Trek to show support to Lisa, one of my very best friends who had to go through her diagnosis twice and gruelling treatment, all through covid, but Velindre were there for her every step of the way.”

Lisa, Mia and Marion are also doing the challenge in memory of family and friends they have lost to cancer, and to support those that have also had a cancer diagnosis and going through treatment.

Lisa added: “Having experienced the wonderful and crucial work of Velindre first hand, we are now more determined and focussed to raise as much as possible.

“This will be a tough challenge; there will be steep climbs and descents and trails will vary from rocky, dusty tracks to muddy/boggy areas. On some days we will be walking up to 11 hours a day!

“We have the next two years to fundraise, train and get fit.

“We are covering our travelling costs by self-funding, so all monies raised go to the charity.

“We really need your help and support to motivate us to get fit over the next two years.

“Please, please support us and donate as much or as little as you can, every penny will go a long way in supporting all of the incredible work that Velindre Cancer Care provides everyday to its patients and their families.”
