Households in the Vale to receive £350 a month to host fleeing refugees
Households in the Vale of Glamorgan, who welcome refugees into their homes, are to receive a £350 a month “thank you” from the UK government.
Announced today (13th March) the government’s ‘Homes for Ukraine’ scheme calls on people to offer a spare room or an empty property to a refugee for a period of at least six months.
Cabinet Minister Michael Gove said: “There will be no limit on the number of refugees who can come to the UK through this route, and they will be given three years leave to remain, with the right to work and access public services.”
Anticipating that tens of thousands of Ukrainian refugees may hopefully be taken in by UK families, he added: “Local authorities would also receive £10,000 in extra funding per refugee for support services – with more for children of school age.”
People wanting to apply to take in refugees fleeing war-torn Ukraine will be able to express an interest from in offering accommodation directly online when it launches tomorrow (14th March). Both applicants and refugees will be required to go through security checks before allocations can be granted.
