Barry, Bridgend, Cowbridge, Dinas Powys and Penarth: Remembrance Day Parade and Services:

Remembrance Sunday is a national opportunity for us all to remember the sacrifice of all those that have defended our freedoms and protected our way of life.

A day given to commemorate the contribution of military and civilian servicemen and women in the two World Wars and later conflicts.

Events involving parades, church services and the laying of Poppy wreaths and the fixing of wooden crosses are held in cities, towns and villages throughout the country on the second Sunday in November – the closest Sunday to Armistice Day the anniversary of the end of hostilities in World War I on 11th November in 1918.

Local events are being held this Sunday, 13th November, including:

Barry:

All Barry Residents and Visitors are invited by Barry Town Council to the Remembrance Day Parade and Services:

The Parade:

• Please meet at King Square, Holton Road, outside the Town Hall at approximately 10.00am, the Parade will be formed up by the Royal British Legion and Parade Marshals.

• The Parade will step off from King Square at 10:20am

• The route will be down Holton Road towards the Vale of Glamorgan Civic Offices, where there will be a pause at the Merchant Navy memorial, for reflection and wreath laying.  The parade will then Step off again and continue down Holton Road to Broad Street and the Gladstone Roundabout. The parade will walk around the left hand of the Roundabout and will continue up Gladstone Road to the Cenotaph at Memo Arts Centre, where the parade will be formed up around the Cenotaph.

The Outdoor service:

• The outdoor service will begin at approximately 10:45am. Those not participating in the parade are to congregate at the Cenotaph before 10:45am

• After the service there will be a 2 minute silence followed by the wreath laying – this is completed in an order and the public should wait until after the services to lay wreaths.

The Indoor Service:

• The Indoor service will start 11:20/11:30am, following the outdoor service. All the public are invited to participate.

Bridgend:

A Remembrance Parade and Service has been held for many years in Bridgend with representatives of The Armed Forces, Veterans, Civic Organisations and Associations, Town and Community Councils, and members of the public.

This year’s commemoration is organised by Bridgend Town Council. With support from Military Advisor, Mr John Harris, it will take place within the pedestrianised streets of Bridgend town centre. 

• 10:25am: Parade to muster in Adare Street outside H.Samuel

• 10:40am: The parade will step off in Adare Street and turn right into Caroline Street. At the bottom of Caroline Street, it will turn right into Dunraven Place 

• 10:45am – 10:50am: Parade Marshall to move Parade into position at War Memorial

• 10:50am – 11:00am: A commemorative service will be conducted by Reverend Rachel Wheeler.

11:00am:

• Last Post

• Standards are lowered

• Two Minute Silence

• Reveille

11:05am – 11:20am

• Dedication – Kohima Epitaph

• Commitment

• Laying of Wreaths

• Blessing

• National Anthems (God Save the King & Welsh National Anthem)

11:20am:

The event will be concluded by Reverend Rachel Wheeler.

• the parade will march up Wyndham Street

• turn left into York Place

• turn left into Market Street

• turn left into Dunraven Place

• provide a salute past the War Memorial

• continue down Dunraven place

• turn left into Caroline Street

• turn left into Adare Street where the parade will be dismissed.

Cowbridge:

Wreath laying and service:

Leading up to the two-minute silence at 11.00am, wreaths will be laid by a large number of local organisations as well as representatives of the British legions and Armed Services followed by a short service at the War Memorial at the town hall.

A parade will then leave to the Holy Cross church for an Ecumenical Act of Remembrance Service.

Afterwards, the parade will return to the War Memorial.

Dinas Powys:

10.00 – 10.30am:

• St Peter’s Church, Remembrance Day Service

10.45am:

• The Twyn in the Village Centre

11.00am:

• Two minutes silence

• Reading of the Names of the Fallen

• Laying of Wreaths and a short service

• Refreshments after the service at the Lee Hall

Hosted by Dinas Powys Baptist Church.

Llantwit Major:

Llantwit Major Town Council in association with the Royal British Legion Branch of Llantwit Major, are pleased to provide details for Remembrance Sunday.

A Parade will take place commencing from the rugby club car park.

Veterans are welcome to attend and Parade.

• Those Parading are asked to be at the car park for 10.15am

• The service at the Cenotaph is scheduled to start at approx. 10.50am and conclude 11.20am

• The Parade will then march back through Town.

Penarth:

At approximately 10.25am, the parade will leave from memorial gardens at Rectory Road towards Stanwell Road. It will take the most direct route via Victoria Avenue to All Saints Church for the service.

The service commences at 10.50am in time for the Act of Remembrance and two minutes silence at 11.00am followed by reveille.

At midday the parade will reform and march off to the Ex-Servicemen’s club via Victoria Avenue to Stanwell Road, through to the roundabout on Windsor Road and down Windsor Road to the club.

Veterans are invited to march with families, Serving Personnel and Cadets.
