Barry RFC travel to Monmouth on Saturday, 17th September, for their first Group D match in the WRU Division One Cup.
Both teams started the league season with a narrow victory, Barry winning 8-7 at Dinas Powys in Division One East Central, and Monmouth beating Senghenydd 17-15 at home in Division One East.
Although league points are a priority, head coach Liam Scott will take a strong squad to Monmouth. “We want to win to keep the momentum going,” he said. The line-up is likely to include some players who were not involved at Dinas Powys.
With league games being called off last weekend following the death of HM The Queen, Barry have a home fixture against Porth Quins to rearrange, which may have to be fitted in during the international programme.
Barry’s senior squad had Saturday off but turned out in strength to support the club’s Youth team in their Cardiff WRU Regional Youth Cup Group A match against Dinas Powys at the Reservoir Field. Barry won 59-0.
“It was a great crowd, and the Youth got a good win,” said Scott. “There are players coming through for next year and the year after. It’s a real positive.”
The Youth team will be travelling on the team coach to support the Bombers at Monmouth this weekend.
The Cup competition has been restructured this season, giving all teams three group games, with the group winner qualifying for the knockout stages. Barry have home fixtures against Division One East Newbridge on October 15th, and fellow East Central Rhydyfelin on October 29th.
