BARRY, missing key ball carriers in their forwards including captain Rhys Behrens, started slowly against a strong Rhiwbina side, and quickly found themselves trailing 14-0 following two well-worked scores.
But against the team which won the opening season tournament two weeks earlier, Barry battled for everything and never let their heads drop, with hard-working forwards Rhys Bryn and Max O’Sullivan the pick of the bunch up front.
Midway through the second half Barry finally gained some ascendency, but in trying to force it, they unfortunately coughed the ball up for Rhiwbina to grab a third try on the counter.
Again Barry refused to go away, and the impressive George Strong was almost rewarded with consolation try, only to be held up just short.
The coaches were disappointed with another slow start. “Last week we went 15-0 down against Beddau before clawing our way back to win 25-20 with a few minutes to go,” said head coach Peter O’Sullivan. “This week we went 14-0 down early on, and it cost us.”
Barry are home to Cardiff Quins on Saturday and hope the work in training this week on “starting with a bang and being more physical” pays dividends.
