ON Monday night, I became Britain’s Minister for Artificial Intelligence, the first dedicated AI Cabinet minister anywhere in Europe.
AI is likely the most significant technology in human history. The best case for it is so compelling that it is almost unfathomable: a reindustrialised Britain, stronger national security, public services transformed for the better, transformed into something that allows us to live happier, more prosperous lives.
I am determined that the Vale should be at the very heart of this transformation. We are already closer to the frontier than most people realise. During my 10 months in the junior ministerial position of Minister for AI and Online Safety, I stood with engineers at IQE, KLA and Vishay Newport, part of the semiconductor cluster growing across south Wales, and chaired the government’s first Semiconductor Advisory Panel on their doorstep.
I have helped bring one of the country’s new AI Growth Zones to South Wales, with a data centre investment worth billions landing in our region, bringing construction work, skilled jobs and supply chain contracts with it. In my first months as your MP, I secured £40 million in government investment for Barry and the Vale, already going into our town centres and public services, and I am pushing hard on a pledge to help create a thousand new job opportunities for Vale residents by 2030.
At the same time, I am acutely aware of the concerns some people have about AI. It is my responsibility to work at relentless pace to make sure none of them are realised. That means jobs created here, and it means safety and British values built into this technology from the start.
In all of this, the Vale will remain central to *how* I do the job, not just what I deliver. I will keep testing every decision against what I hear on doorsteps and in our town halls, because a national effort on AI only works if people like you are part of shaping it.
I am determined the Vale gets to lead this technology, and prosper because of it.
