Cardiff Airport take heart from first away win

IT WAS a very disappointing outing for Cardiff Airport FC in the FAW Amateur Trophy, falling to defeat at Treharris Athletic Western.

An error-strewn first 15 minutes saw the tie virtually settled as Matthew Sellick headed home a corner. Treharris added to their lead when Dylan Hodgson scored from a penalty.

Airport grew into the match as the half wore on without scoring. However, a long-range strike from Ollie Amos reduced the arrears in the second half. Airport conceded another penalty which Treharris were unable to convert. Nevertheless, the home side managed to hold on and progress to the next round.

Away at Llanelli

Following on from this, Airport faced another long away trip to Stebonheath Park in Llanelli to play their next league match against Evans and Williams FC.

Their opponents narrowly missed promotion last season so a tough task awaited. After a cagey first half, the match burst into life with the home side looking increasingly likely to score. However, goalkeeper Rhys Picton was in inspired form, pulling off several one on one saves.

Airport benefitted from this, with the breakthrough coming with seven minutes on the clock when subs Oakley Barnett and Archie Jones combined, with the latter slotting home.
Airport faced another all out assault on their goal in the dying minutes but defended brilliantly as a unit to clinch the first points of the season.
They now look forward to a home match against Penydarren on Friday night under the lights at Jenner Park.
