Penalty shoot out leads to Cup exit for Airport

CARDIFF Airport returned to football league action under the lights with a Friday visit to the Glasbrook Field to take on tough opponents in Penrhiwceiber Rangers.

With injuries and suspensions taking their toll, there were no less than seven teenagers in the Airport starting line-up. They made a bad start when poor defending at a corner was punished by home captain Warren Jones, who finished from close range.

Airport dug in and half time arrived with the score unchanged. However, early in the second half, hesitation in the Airport defence saw striker Thomas steal in to double the home side’s advantage.
There was further disappointment to follow when a late penalty was conceded for the third successive match, which was converted by Jones to complete a 3-0 defeat.

Welsh Cup

It was back to Welsh Cup action with a visit to Canolfan Stadium to face FC Cwmaman. Airport made a slow start, creating very little and were punished midway through the first half when home striker Karakus stole through the defence to finish.

Airport were back on terms 10 minutes into the second half when top scorer Ollie Amos converted from the penalty spot after a foul on captain Aiden Lewis.

Despite looking dominant after that, Airport were unable to find a winner, sending the tie into a penalty shootout. Despite a good start with Lewis scoring, followed by a save from goalkeeper Riley Allen, the Airport lost the shootout 3-4 and now are left to focus on the league programme for the rest of the season.
