THE Holy Cross Church in Cowbridge is hosting ‘A Festival of Angels’ during Advent.
The beautiful and tranquil exhibition is centred around the impressive angels devised and designed several years ago by artist Anne-Marie Kers and made with the help of fellow artists Claire Carrington, Dawn Wesselby and support from community groups from St Wulfram’s Church in Grantham.
Helen Whyment, a member of the Holy Cross congregation, tracked the angels down—they had been stored at Sheffield Cathedral—and arranged for them to be transported to Cowbridge.
Helen said: “When I contacted Sheffield Cathedral, they were on the verge of disposing of them! I took a gamble, not knowing if they were usable, and had them transported to Holy Cross. They were in a sorry state! The wings were tattered and torn and the bodies spoilt by mould and general decline.
Cowbridge community groups have joined in the spirit, crafting their own designs to accompany the larger-than-life angels, making an amazing display in Holy Cross.
“Members of the church and people in Cowbridge rallied together to restore them and now they are back in their full glory.”
Reverend Duncan Ballard commented: “When I suggested angels for a display this year, I never expected this magnificent spectacle! The people of Cowbridge have really pulled out all the stops. If you have a few spare minutes at this incredibly busy time of year, why not pop into church and enjoy the beauty and tranquillity, as the angels bring you their message of hope and love to everyone in the community.”
If you would like to come and meet the angels, the display is free of charge and open until 6th January 2025, or come along to one of the Holy Cross Church services or events over the Advent period:
- Friday 20th December – Cowbridge Male Voice Choir concert at 7pm.
- Tuesday 24th December – Children’s Crib Carol Service at 4pm.
- Tuesday 24th December – Midnight Mass, 11pm.
- Wednesday 25th December – Christmas Communion at 11am.
- Sunday 29th December – Angels from the Realms of Glory Communion Service, 11am.
- Saturday 5th January 2025 – Christmas Songs of Praise Carol Service, 6pm.
