Rugby club with Scott Quinnell pays tribute to three stalwarts

Pencoed RFC were finally able to celebrate the lives of three great supporters of the club, who worked tirelessly to keep Pencoed RFC going through many tough times.
Local businessman Terry Reffell, a guarantor for Pencoed RFC, was a man who gave his all to the club. Terry`s grandson is Tommy Reffell – a Pencoed boy who now plays for Leicester Tigers.
President Mal Summers was Pencoed’s first captain after the Second World War and was also a long-serving chairman and president.
SSGT Gwyn Morgan BEM – Royal Corp of Transport – was also a long-time committee member, fundraiser and generous supporter to all sections.
There are not enough words to describe what these men gave to Pencoed RFC. What men they were and we are so grateful to them for their tireless efforts for Pencoed.
The celebration evening was held at Pencoed RFC and included a two-course meal and a presentation slide show of the men’s commitment to the club. Family members were presented with a gift from Wales’ own Scott Quinnell.
The evening featured Maesteg Male Voice Choir and Corporal Sophie Perriam of the Royal Marines Band Service. Sophie played ‘The Last Post’ – which had been played at Gwyn’s funeral – with a minute’s silence at the end.
The evening continued with a set from Scott Quinnell, comedian Lloyd Davies and finally singer Bruce Anderson.
Terry, Mal and Gwyn would have enjoyed the evening, but perhaps not the fuss. Everyone at Pencoed RFC would like to thank their families for allowing Pencoed to give something back to them.
A sad postscript to this event came with the news that Graham Lewis sadly passed away on Saturday morning. Another great man has left Pencoed RFC. A massive void to fill. Rest in peace, Graham.
