PEOPLE across the Vale are being invited to put on their walking boots on Saturday, 22nd August, to make a real difference to local families facing hardship.
Vale Foodbank has launched a special fundraising pilgrimage walk in the hope of reversing a worrying decline in food donations.
The charity says it is being squeezed from both sides. Demand for emergency food parcels continues to rise. At the same time, donations are falling.
In May 26 alone, the Foodbank processed 20.5 per cent more food vouchers than it did in May 2025. That represents 53 additional households turning to the charity for help in just one month.
However, figures show that food donations have fallen every year for the past three years. Overall, donations have dropped by 28.77 per cent during that period.
People turn to the Foodbank when their cupboards are empty. But the Foodbank can only help if its own shelves are full. The charity is reminding shoppers that one of the easiest ways to support its work is to leave an extra item or two in one of the many collection points in supermarkets across the Vale.
However, there is another opportunity to help while enjoying a memorable day out. On Saturday, 22nd August, Vale Foodbank will host a fundraising pilgrimage walk through the historic heart of Barry.
The five-mile guided walk begins at 10am from Coastlands and follows a gentle route around some of the town’s most fascinating churches, chapels and historic buildings before returning to the starting point.
The organisers say the event is designed to be accessible for people of most abilities. Much of the route follows pavements, making it suitable for those looking for an enjoyable and relaxed day rather than a demanding hike.
Along the way, participants will be joined by special guests and local experts, who will share stories about the history, architecture and people connected with the places visited.
Every ticket sold will help provide emergency food parcels for people across the Vale. Tickets for the Pilgrimage for Vale Foodbank cost £20 per person. They are available now through Eventbrite here.
