New music school for children opens in Llantwit Major

A NEW music school for children aged 0-6 years and their grown-ups is coming to Llantwit Major.

Honco Monco Music, led by musician Rhian McKernan, began on Monday, 5th October at the CF61 centre.

Rhian, a professional guitarist and music teacher, said she is looking forward to welcoming families to the new venture after three years running classes in Melbourne, Australia.

Rhian McKernan has run similar classes in Australia.

The musician, from Barry, returned to Wales earlier this year and is now bringing her experience back to the Vale, with classes “thoughtfully designed around the idea that our bodies are our primary instruments with a focus on child-led, pressure-free learning”.

The mixed-age model means siblings aged 6 and under can attend together.

She said: “Working with families has brought me a renewed appreciation for my own musical upbringing. I want to create a space where families can come together to sing and be silly without judgement. Play is just as important for adults as children.”

“I believe it’s important for us to be active music makers in an increasingly digital world. We are laying rich foundations for music to become your child’s natural second language.”
