PENCOED RFC hosted South Gower and a try-saving tackle from Jack Morgan in the opening minutes kept the home line intact, the flanker pulling off a superb cover tackle to deny the visitors’ left wing what appeared to look a certain score.
South Gower took the lead with a penalty goal from Sam Williamson. Pencoed were doing well in the opening quarter into the stiff breeze and good combined play brought a try at the posts to lead 7-3. Williamson then kicked his second penalty.
Pencoed returned to the attack and swift hands from the threes saw Iwan Powell put Finn Northop over with a well-timed pass. Another cover tackle from eventual Pencoed man of the match Morgan snuffed out a threatening attack. Pencoed then paid the price for an earlier yellow card, a James Tune try and Williamson conversion giving South Gower a 12-13 lead at the break.
Early in the second half, Pencoed regained the lead, skipper Tom Geere with the initial thrust into the visitors’ 22 before good handling from several members of the pack saw scrum half Cai Harries go over at the posts. Rhys Clarke converted for a 19-13 lead.
Pencoed had to defend multiple phases in their own 22 before increasing their lead. Connor Davies carryied to within metres of the try line and further carries from the pack eventually saw full back Powell cross for the bonus point try.
South Gower then hit back with a try from Sam Court. The Pencoed game then became punctuated with a plethora of conceded penalties with the visitors capitalising with territorial gains and, in the dying minutes, scored the winning points with a try and conversion. Pencoed will reflect on two yellow, having outscored the visitors four tries to three.
