RAIL PASSENGERS travelling to and from the Vale faced major disruption on Tuesday afternoon after a train broke down near Heath High Level station in Cardiff.
The broken-down vehicle blocked the track meaning other trains were not in their correct location according to the timetable, which led to several hours of chaos on lines throughout south-east Wales.
One train travelling from Barry to Cardiff Central was made to wait more than 40 minutes at Grangetown station with staff unable to tell passengers how long the delay would last. Some passengers wanting to reach the centre of Cardiff decided to leave the train and walked the remainder of the journey.
The delays and cancellations lasted until around 3pm, and trains were running largely to schedule by the evening rush hour.
A Transport for Wales spokesperson said: “Due to an earlier fault on the train at Heath High Level, services on the Rhymney line were disrupted. The train has returned to the depot and services have now resumed, but may be subject to short-notice changes.
“Customers are encouraged to check for the latest information before travelling.”
