FINALLY, football has reached the ‘home straight’ and the season’s end is in sight despite the horrendous weather during the winter months.
In the Premier Division, Ely Rangers will be disappointed with their 11th place finish which may end up in relegation to the Championship. This depends on the number of clubs relegated from the Ardal League. Their final game of the season is this Saturday against Porthcawl Town Athletic.
In the Championship, there’s possible success and also disappointment. Dinas Powys are the league leaders and beat one of their rivals – Penygraig United – 2-0 last Saturday at The Murch. Goals from Temitope Adekunle and a late penalty from Gareth Emmanuel sealed the points. They have more big games coming up against AFC Wattstown on Saturday, followed by Cardiff Bay Warriors (22nd April) and Cardiff Cosmos (25th April) which will define their season. Dinas are in a group of six teams that all still have to play each other to see who ends up in the top two promotion places.
Vale United unfortunately have had a poor season for them. A defeat and a draw against two other clubs in the relegation places has sealed their fate. Goal scorers in their 3-2 defeat against AFC Penrhiwceiber were Kieran Neil and Adam Preece. Jason James was their scorer in the 1-1 draw against Tonyrefail BGC.
In Division One West, Sully Sports have now finished their season ending on a victory against Fairwater 3-2. Nick Hooper, Rory Price and Andy Smith were on Sully’s scoresheet.
Cogan Corries had an outside chance of promotion but conceding two stoppage-time goals against promotion rivals Treforest, followed by a 2-2 draw at Cwm Welfare, has put them out of the promotion picture. Jac Jones was the scorer at Treforest while Callum Pearce and Jamie Harris were the scorers at Cwm Welfare.
Holton Road’s relegation fate was sealed long ago and it’s been a damage limitation situation since – recently losing 6-0 at home to Grange Albion.
