A FREE event to celebrate the lengthening of the days and the approaching spring is being held at The Knap Lake and Gardens, Barry, today – Friday 3rd February.
Members of the public are invited to gather at the park entrance near the cafes at 5pm for ‘The Coming of the Light’, which will include a gentle walk at the lake with contemporary artwork and quotations situated along the way.
There will be an opportunity to share thoughts, poems, artworks and messages, while music will be provided by local singer Laura Bradshaw and the Porthkerry Community Choir.
The event is being organised by Art4u, a voluntary organisation that aims to make the viewing of art accessible for all.
Glyn Pooley of Art4u said: “We’ve been running The Coming of the Light for 12 years. It’s a gentle, uplifting event where people are brought to the lake area in a calm, contemplative setting.
“There will be lanterns and plaques with quotes on them along the route, plus some ceramic artworks for people to appreciate.
“Some people have made ornaments from wood with inspiring messages on them, and the public can make their own contributions to the event – if anyone has a poem or something inspiring they want to share, they’re more than welcome to do so.
“On previous years at The Coming of the Light, we’ve had a number of lovely sunsets and you can see all the reflections of the light in the still water – it really is a beautiful sight.
“We created the Tree of Peace and Friendship near the entrance to the park where we’ll be meeting on the day, and we’ve worked with the council over the last few years to encourage them to enhance the area.
“Last year, they put up some more trees and different plants, and that’s added to that feeling of peace and calmness we sense when we’re in the park.”
While the event is free, there will be an opportunity to make a voluntary donation to Art4u to help cover the costs of putting on future events for the community.
