DOCTORAL Researcher and Associate Lecturer at Aberystwyth University, will host a talk in conjunction with the Barry War Museum at The Park Hotel, Barry on 1st October at 6.30pm. The event will be free of charge.
This talk explores Barry’s often-forgotten role in the struggle to protect the Welsh language and how the story of modern Wales can be told through the lens of Barry.
In the early 20th Century, Barry was an important centre for the growth of Welsh nationalism. It was home to several men and women who were crucial to the long struggle to protect the Welsh language from extinction.
From the pioneering work of headteacher Arthen Evans and Cymdeithas Cymrodorion y Barri, to Saunders Lewis’s first major political speech on Welsh nationalism, and the moulding of Gwynfor Evans’s identity, Barry was a centre of Welsh life that proved important to the achievements of Cymdeithas y Cymrodorion and Plaid Cymru.
