A MEMBER of Rhoose Lifequards Club, 21-year-old Evie Wong, has won a top award recognising her progress in international surf lifesaving competitions.
Evie received the impressive accolade of Sportsperson of the Year in the Surf Lifesaving Club of Great Britain’s annual Heroes of the Surf Awards. Her award celebrated her “exceptional dedication and achievements” with Rhoose Lifeguards.
In 2024, internationally, Evie came second in the ski race event at the World Life-Saving Championships in Australia and fifth in the beach sprint event. She also took third place in the ski race at the Youth World Championships in Italy.
Nationally, Evie became the overall highest point scorer at the GB Open National Championships and came first in the board, ski and flags events at the OceanPerf UK Challenge. Regionally, Evie won the Welsh and National titles in the flags and sprints events.
The awards were held on Saturday, 1 March at the Riviera Centre in Torquay, Devon, Glen Mayhew, the chairman of the Surf Lifesaving Club of Great Britain, said: “Evie’s dedication to the sport has been truly exceptional.
“Her achievements in 2024 were nothing short of remarkable, proving herself as a multi-skilled, global competitor, and her consistency and commitment to excellence have set a standard for others to follow.
“Evie’s achievements at such a young age are truly inspiring. Her hard work, dedication, and incredible results have made her a force to be reckoned with in the world of surf lifesaving.”
The charity began with a small group of passionate individuals in 1955 blossoming into a nationwide search and rescue charity and training organisation with 69 clubs and around 10,000 members across Britain.
Last year, the charity’s members made 3,525 potentially life-saving interventions.
Surf Lifesaving Sport is the other arm of the organisation which involves both recreational and competitive disciplines. The club, and its fellow clubs the world over, are hoping that one day surf lifesaving will become an Olympic sport.
