Sully Centurions Cricket Club had a day to forget, with both sides losing heavily.
The First XI hosted Radyr II at Burnham Avenue. The visitors won the toss and opted to bat first. Ben O’Neil and Jonathan Corden shared an opening half century stand before Nathan Cuddihy had Corden caught by Tom Davies for 31. Only seven more runs had been added when O’Neil became Cuddihy’s second victim, being trapped lbw for 23.
A steady procession of wickets followed, with Radyr looking in trouble on 118 for 7. However, an eighth-wicket partnership of 54 between Nick O’Neil (30) and Karl Ford (43 not out) gave Radyr a respectable total of 190 for 9 at the end of the allotted 45 overs. For Centurions, Jake Griffett, with figures of 4 for 39, was the standout bowler. There were also two wickets each for Cuddihy and Bharat and one for Ricki Griffett.
After tea, Centurions got off to a poor start. Opener Dave Goodway saw partners come and go as the Radyr bowlers took control. Goodway finally went for 42 in the 21st over, with the score on 81 for 5. Tom Davies hit 30, but of the remaining batsmen, only Adam Gilliatt (14 not out) and Bharat (13) made any real impact and with three ducks in the final four wickets, the innings closed on 133 all out in the 37th over, well short of the target.

The Second XI travelled to Pontnewynydd and suffered a similar fate. Struggling for numbers due to late withdrawals, they were only able to field 10 men. It was always going to be a hard ask. Batting first on a pitch that had seen some overnight and early morning rain, Centurions had a bad start when skipper Dan Merchant was bowled for 4 in the third over.
A second-wicket partnership of 52 between Jason Hicks (10) and Ben Spear (36) and then a fine innings of 58 from Dan Chaulk gave Sully some hope, but, apart from 13 from Patrick Lane, the rest of the batters couldn’t reach double figures and the innings ended on 143 for 8.
In reply, the home side suffered a similar early loss, with Dan Chaulk removing Saud’s middle stump for a duck, with the score on 4. Unfortunately, the partnership of Jones, who finished on 74 not out, and Barnsley took the game away from Centurions. The only other wicket was Barnsley, who was caught and bowled by Rukshan for 39. Jones was then joined by Rogers, who ended on 25 not out, and the target was reached in the 22nd over.
