Nathan Berry, 38, was arrested in March 2026, and police seized his smartphone where they found images of children.

Berry, who was employed by Penarth Leisure Centre at the time of his arrest, provided officers with their names, and when police visited their parents to identify them, they learned that the children were non-verbal.

Officers found more than 120 indecent images of children on his phone, along with evidence he had sexually assaulted a child.

Berry pleaded guilty to eight offences – four counts of taking indecent photographs, two counts of making indecent images, one count of possession of prohibited images, and one sexual assault of a child under 13.

During the sentencing hearing at Cardiff Crown Court, Berry was handed a prison term of five years and four months plus an extended licence period of eight years.

The court heard that Berry targeted the children due to their vulnerabilities.

Berry is also the subject of a Restraining Order and a Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO). As part of the SHPO, Berry is banned from having any unsupervised contact or communication with any child under the age of 16.

DC Julie Lewis, who worked on the case, said: “Nathan Berry betrayed the trust of these children and their parents in the most dreadful way.

“We hope the outcome at court goes some way in helping them to rebuild their ability to trust and feel safe again.

“This investigation demonstrates our commitment to safeguarding vulnerable people.”
