IT WAS another mixed day for Sully Centurions, with the First XI falling at Whitchurch, while the Seconds kept up their good run by defeating Whitchurch Thirds at home.
An injury to Kieron Ferriday left the Firsts with just 10 men prior to the game at Whitchurch Heath. Whitchurch’s opening pair took advantage and put together a partnership of 118 before losing the wicket of Swain for 45. This preceded a bit of a collapse, as four more fell for just 37 runs. But Centurions did not take full advantage of the situation, with some dropped catches that really should have stuck.
With the tail enders in, Sully were unable to take advantage and the last two wickets were worth 37 runs to the hosts. Jake Griffett and brother Ricki both picked up three wickets for Sully, with Reynolds (63) top scoring for Whitchurch. The total of 218 for 8 was more than it should have been, but still gettable.
After tea, Shae Ellis and Rhett Jones set about the task of chasing the win. They made steady progress and had reached 68 when Ellis fell to Best for 30. Rhett hung around and, after losing Gethin Hicks for just two, he was joined by skipper Ricki Griffett, who helped him put on 73 for the third wicket, before falling to Shafiq for 33. Jones finally went, 10 runs later, for a well-made 63. Centurions seemed to lose momentum after this and the run chase ended on 195 all out. Shafiq (3-36) took the main bowling honours for the hosts.
Whitchurch Heath II 218-8, Sully Centurions 195 all out
The Second XI bowled first against Whitchurch Heath at Burnham Avenue, with some early damage being done by a run out and a wicket for Shan Rehman. This meant that McQuaid and Milburn were back in the pavilion with the score on 40. Webb and Reed put on 60 for the third wicket. Webb, who was bowled by Amrik Singh, finally fell for 71, to leave the scoreboard on 146-5. But, as in the First XI match, the Whitchurch middle and lower order rallyied and Young (20) Mohammad (36) and Hopcraft (21) all contributed to the final score of 232-8. For Centurions, Kapil Rokad, with three wickets, took the bowling honours.
Sully began their reply in disastrous fashion, losing Sonu for just one, but Basil John and Vasant took the score to 88, before Basil fell for 50. Vasant was then joined by Dinesh, who hit 25 before being dismissed by Gowtham with the score on 143. Only one more wicket fell, as Shafiqur Rehman (29 not out) joined Vasant and they chased down the target with nine overs to go. Vasant hit 103 not out, his first century in many years for Sully.
This leaves Centurions 31 points clear at the top of the table.
