Fly tippers take advantage of volunteers’ community spirit:
Volunteers at a community library – set up in a redundant bus shelter in Llanmaes – say that people are taking advantage of their good will and are using it as a dumping ground for old books and CDs and DVDs.
The sheer volume of ‘donations’ mean that volunteers have to take bin bags full of books to the tip.
Bethan Pocock, a volunteer librarian in Llanmaes, told the Glamorgan Star: “During lockdown, with the support of the community council, we were given permission to turn the bus shelter into a book exchange. The idea took off and we soon had to put in two sets of shelves to accommodate the number of books donated.
“With the number of people who were walking, cycling and indeed driving through the village. there were a stream of visitors taking and exchanging books. The facility is still popular with adults and children alike. Unfortunately, people from outside the village have been dumping bags full of books and other items when the shelves are full – despite a polite notice asking them not to – and we end up having to take items to the tip.
“We don’t want to close down the facility as it is still enjoyed by villagers and visitors to the village alike. It has helped unite people in the community and is run entirely by volunteers. However, if it continues to be abused , then the community council is likely to ask us to close it down.
“I should say we continue to receive first class donations, and we are all reading more than we were here in Llanmaes and beyond.”
