THE Sully Centurions First XI travelled to Ebbw Vale and came back with their third win in four games.
Batting first, Centurions lost the wicket of Zia Gehlan (7) with the score on 28. Opening partner Ricki Griffett was joined by Shae Ellis and the pair put on 34 for the second wicket until Griffett was caught for 41. Ellis and Kieron Ferriday shared a stand of 49 and Sully were looking good, but a middle order collapse saw the loss of 5 wickets for just 16 runs.
However, a fightback by Nick Jones (36 not out) and John Gee (15) took the score up to 190 all out. Mower (4-30) and Jenkins (3-38) were the standout bowlers for the home side.
After tea, Ebbw Vale lost early wickets and at one stage, Nathan Cuddihy was on a hat-trick but narrowly missed out. He was compensated by having a double-wicket maiden. At 78 for 7, it looked as though the Ebbw Vale innings would soon be over but, in a repeat of the Centurions’ innings, the tail certainly wagged, with Morgan (32) and Jenkins (23) putting up a dogged resistance.
However, the fall of Jenkins’ wicket in the 38th over saw Sully get over the line. A total of 159 all out meant that the victory margin of 31 was far less than would have been expected.
Cuddihy (3-36) and Jones (2-19) were the pick of Centurions’ bowling attack,
Ebbw Vale 159 all out, Sully Centurions 190 all out.
Defeat for Seconds
THE Seconds suffered another big defeat against Monmouth at Burnham Avenue. It wasn’t helpful that several players were not available and Sully took to the field with only seven. Batting first, Centurions lost two early wickets, but Kapil (40) and Imran (27) put up a good fight. However, when they had both departed, it didn’t take long for the innings to collapse to a respectable 114 all out.
It was inevitable that there would be plenty of gaps in the field and the Monmouth batsmen made full use of this. Only one wicket fell, that of Roberts, who was caught by wicket keeper Paul Harrison off the bowling of Harish Hirani for 34, with the score on 65. Jones (37) and Pilot (19) completed the job and the match was over after just 12 overs.
