Huge Cup upset as Island Marine blitz Barry Athletic

Vale of Glamorgan Football League round up by Hywel Dark

ISLAND MARINE produced their performance of the season to thump league leaders Barry Athletic 4-0 to lift the Supporters Cup for the first time in 12 years.

Marine made a quick start, with Gabriel Oram striking in the opening minutes, before Geraint Parry doubled the lead just before the half hour. Then on the stroke of half time, Jack Blackmore made it 3-0. Athletic are undefeated in the league and on course to lift the title – and in the Barry Cup final – so this was certainly not in the script.

Just on the hour mark, Bradley Enticott made it 4 and Marine could feel their hands on the trophy. A first victory in this competition for the club since 2014 after finishing runners up twice in the last four seasons.

In the Premier Division the title race took a major turn in the mid-week games as second placed Cardiff Airport lost to bottom side Vale United as Vale came back from 2 down to win 3-2 and lift themselves off the foot.

On Saturday, Airport lost more ground on leaders Barry Athletic, who won 7-1 in their midweek vs Vale Madrid, as they drew 2-2 with third place St Athan as Lewis Parry scored twice to see St Athan come back from two down.

AFC Rhoose dropped to the bottom of the table after a last gasp 2-1 loss to Island Marine last Wednesday, but gained a valuable point this past Saturday as they also came from 2 down to draw 2-2 with Penarth Town, McKenzie Davies-Ashton getting the important equaliser.

In the Championship, Cogan Coronation made a big statement in their title chase as they routed Rhoose Social 7-0. Ed Coffey scored a hat trick as Social finished the game with nine men. Dinas Powys stay right on Cogan’s trail with a 2-0 win over Island Marine Reserves. The win sees Dinas sit 7 points off Cogan with two games in hand.

Cardiff Airport Vets sit third after a 3-1 win over bottom club St Athan Reserves. Airport Vets are not quite out of the title race yet, eight points off top with a game in hand. AFC Rhoose Development were pegged by back to draw 3-3 with Peterston Super Ely, Jon Wooten completing a hat trick to rescue a point for Peterston.

Porthkerry Panthers scored twice in the last five minutes to go from 4-3 down to 5-4 up and beat Vale Athletic, Josh Parsons coming off the bench to win it and move Porthkerry up three places in the table.

In League One, Sparta Park got closer to the league title as they hit third place Sully Sports for six, beating them 6-0. Nathan Donnelly hit four goals, ending Sully’s 10 league game winning streak in emphatic fashion. Second place Penarth Town Development came back from 0-3 down to beat Vale of Glamorgan Rovers 7-4 in a crazy game. Penarth stay four points off Sparta but have played two games more.

Fourth place Llantwit Major Thirds thumped fifth place Barry Athletic Development 7-0, Jamie Viscount with a hat trick. FC Barry edged out Island Marine Development 2-1, Jordan Yeoman scoring twice.

This weekend sees the Dockers Cup final with Dinas Powys taking on Rhoose Social at Jenner Park on Sunday 2pm.
