THE Sully Centurions had a day of mixed fortunes, with the First XI slipping to a heavy defeat at home to Pontymister and Crosskeys, while the Second XI defeated Pontnewynydd by 4 wickets.
First XI skipper Ricki Griffett won the toss and put the opposition in, a decision that looked to be justified when the visitors lost their first wicket with only 10 runs on the board. However, this brought together Bhatt and Ahmed, who went on to share a century partnership, before Lloyd Bruce had Ahmed caught for 35.
Bruce struck again a few overs later when Bhatt was also caught for a well-made 69, to leave the score on 127-3. Kumar and Ali kept up the momentum and added another 40, before Kumar fell to another Bruce delivery. Ali departed shortly after, being bowled by Jake Griffett. Ajmal (32) and Mainwaring (14) shared a stand of 25 for the sixth wicket before Mainwaring was caught off the bowling of Ricki Griffett for a final total of 202-6. Bowling honours went to Lloyd Bruce (3-25)
After tea, Bruce continued his good form by hitting 31, which was to be Centurions’ highest score of the innings. The top order Sully batsmen all made starts, but no-one was able to press on for a bigger score. Tom Davies’ 27 was the second highest score, but six lower order batsmen failed to get into double figures, as wickets fell regularly. The final wicket fell at 137, with six overs remaining. This result leaves Sully firmly in mid table.

Over at Pontnewynydd, the Second XI’s ploy of putting the opposition in worked better than the First XI’s did. Wickets began falling early. Some excellent fielding helped the bowlers to keep the opposition in check. By the halfway stage, they had only managed 39 runs, for the loss of three wickets. Some urgency was introduced when Jones came to the crease, and he ended up as the home side’s top scorer. But, although the runs were beginning to flow a little more freely, wickets were beginning to fall again. The final score of 136-7 was always going to be difficult to defend. For Centurions, Kapild Rokad’s 3-19 was the standout bowling performance.
In reply, Sully also lost an early wicket, but a second wicket partnership between Sonu (55) and Dinesh (26) gave Centurions a great platform from which to reach the target. Although there were a few late scares, the game was all over after 31 overs, when the target was reached for the loss of 6 wickets. For Sully, Sonu’s half century was the standout performance, while Abid (3-30) was the home side’s best bowler.
This solidifies Centurions in second place, just a handful of points behind the leaders.
