Fire Service and school staff praised for rapid response to fire
THE Chief Executive of the Vale Council, Rob Thomas, and Andrew RT Davies MS, Senedd Member for South Wales Central, have praised St Athan Primary staff and South Wales Fire and Rescue Service (SWFRS) for their response to a fire that broke out at the school.
Shortly before noon on Wednesday, 12th February, SWFRS attended a fire at the site on Rock Road.
Emergency evacuation procedures were activated, with all staff and pupils exiting the building promptly. That meant everyone emerged safely and no-one sustained any injuries. The fire was in a block of classrooms and an IT suite.
A spokesperson for SWFRS said: “Fire appliances, water bowsers and several specialist officers responded, containing the fire in a small block of classrooms and preventing its spread to the main part of the school.
“Approximately 240 pupils, staff and contractors were safely evacuated, with no reports of any injuries.
“We’d like to thank the school and the local community for their cooperation throughout, and a huge well done to our incredible crews whose tireless efforts brought the incident to a safe conclusion.”
Mr Rob Thomas said: “After news of a fire at St Athan Primary School broke earlier today, the only thing that mattered was that no-one was hurt.
“Thankfully, the professionalism of staff, who quickly followed emergency protocols, along with the swift attendance of South Wales Fire and Rescue Service, ensured this was the case.
“I’d like to recognise those individuals for that response, which meant a serious situation did not become tragic.
“Thank you for your actions, I know I speak for the entire community when I say we are extremely grateful.”
The school will be closed for the rest of the week while staff work with local authority and SWFRS colleagues to assess the damage.
A further announcement regarding ongoing teaching arrangements will be made as soon as possible.

Andrew RT Davies MS, Senedd Member for South Wales Central and former Leader of the Welsh Conservatives, said: “The news reports out of St Athan yesterday were deeply worrying.
“I’d like to put on record my thanks to the emergency services who evacuated staff, pupils and contractors, and I know it will come as a great source of comfort for all of us that current reports indicate everyone is safe.
“Now it’s over to the council, the fire service and school to assess the damage and work to minimise further disruption for pupils, many of whom will be deeply upset by this incident.”
