THE Llantwit Major Writing Circle is organising its first ever literary festival in St Illtud’s Church on Saturday 21st August.
It is a one-day event, entitled A Sense of Place, and there are plans for similar events in the future.
Organiser Kath Little told the Glamorgan Star: “Author and broadcaster Phil Carradice will kick us off with a talk on ‘A Sense of Place’ in writing and certainly, there could be no better place to do this than St Illtud’s, given that it is held to be the oldest seat of learning in the UK.
“Welsh thriller writer, Louise Mumford, author of Sleepless, published by Harper Collins, will lead a Q&A workshop on getting published entitled ‘Everything you wanted to know about getting a book published but were too afraid to ask …’
“There will be workshops with local authors Laura Sheldon (author of Mr Mahli’s Shed), Sarah Persson and Kath Little.
“There will be an art exhibition featuring local artists Gilli-ann Prevett and Martin Kaye.”
Tickets can be obtained through Eventbrite or Nickleby’s Bookshop in Llantwit Major.
The event runs from 4.30pm until 9.00pm.
Kath added: “Drinks will be available but remember to ‘Bring Your Own Picnic’ to enjoy in this stunning location.
“We are planning a much larger event in the future when we hope to encourage local authors and aspiring writers to join us and put the Vale firmly on the writing map where it belongs.”

- 5:45pm – 6:30pm, workshops
- 6:30pm – 7:15pm, picnic (bring your own)
- 7:15pm – 8:30pm, Open mic – writers can book a place to read their own work
- 8:30pm – 9pm, cocoa and a story by candlelight in the Galilee Chapel (extract from a Banner of Dark Shadows, written and read by Martin Kaye)
- 9.00pm, close.
