Council’s warning over fly-tipping

By Philip Irwin

THE Vale Council has issued a warning to house-holders after a recent instance of fly-tipping at Stalling Down near Cowbridge.

The stark warning is that householders who let unregistered waste collectors dump their rubbish could face financial penalties – not just the fly-tippers.

The latest incident was photographed by local resident Michael Tough, who was out for a walk. Mr Tough said that, in his opinion, the tippers had left several pieces of evidence that could identify the house-holder who owned the waste. He said that he hoped council officers would make further enquiries.

It is not the first time Stalling Down has been used for fly-tipping. Mr Tough said he wondered if the council could investigate whether boulders could be used to block access.

A spokesperson for the Vale Council said: “We are aware of reports of fly-tipping on land near Stalling Down. Fly-tipping is a crime that the council takes extremely seriously, with our officers regularly patrolling known hotspots.

“Anyone found to be committing this offence could face serious consequences, including a Fixed Penalty Notice, prosecution, fines of up to £50,000 or even imprisonment.

“It is also an offence to use an unregistered waste carrier to dispose of household of commercial waste.

“It is important that householders only transfer their waste to a registered waste carrier.  We advise people not to pay cash for such work, to keep screenshots of all communications and to always ask to see a valid Waste Carrier’s License. It is also a good idea to take a photo of any vehicles used by the waste carrier. If the carriers are legitimate, they wouldn’t usually object.”
