Why the south Wales coast is glowing

Most years in south Wales, the waters along the Heritage Coast and beyond show off the natural phenomenon of bioluminescence.

It’s the “production and emission of light by a living organism” – in this case plankton.

So far this year, there have been a number of sightings, and over the weekend, Porthcawl photographer Mark J Davies took these pictures just down the coast at Aberavon.

Many thanks to Mark for letting the Glamorgan Star use these photographs.
