Wanderers top 300 in run fest

Barry Wanderers set a 300-plus target against Rogerstone.

Barry Wanderers CC chalked up another win on Saturday, 2nd July, with a 111-run win over Rogerstone Welfare Seconds at Hayes Point.

In what has been a feature of the Wanderers’ season so far they batted first, hoping to set a big total and put pressure on the visitors in the field. Neil Blundell and the returning Sam Harris got the Wanderers off to a blistering start, putting on 79 runs in the first 10 overs. Rogerstone struggled to contain the power of Harris and Blundell’s wristy dexterity and with the score on 136 at drinks, the Wanderers looked on their way to a competitive total.

Rogerstone introduced Smith into the attack and she was the pick of the bowlers finally giving the visitors some cheer with the removal of Blundell for yet another fine innings (72).

Any hopes of reining the Wanderers in however were dashed as Abhilash picked up where Blundell had left off. Abhilash and the increasingly belligerent Harris pounced on any poor balls and together they took the Wanderers past 217 in just the 30th over. Harris would go on to complete a sublime century before falling to Majeed in the 32nd over and at that point a 300-plus score seemed like a tough ask. Not for Abhilash (97no) who took up Harris’ mantle by peppering the boundary and helped by excellent support from captain Ram (8no), the pair added 79 runs in the final 8 overs to allow the Wanderers to finish on 310-2.

In the field it became clear that it would be no walkover for the Wanderers with Rogerstone setting their stall out to take maximum batting points from the game. Despite some excellent and miserly probing bowling from Luke Grant (5-3-4-0) Rogerstone put on 28 in the first 10 overs. Ram (5-2-10-0) was very unlucky not to take a wicket in his spell with the Rogerstone batters defending some very good balls but also taking full advantage of any scoring opportunities. The first wicket fell in the 27th over with the score on 97, Hughes (27) out caught off the bowling of Harris.

Majeed Jnr (64) and Snr (35) took several Wanderers bowlers to task and along with Fahad (38 no) and a healthy extras column they comfortably secured full batting points finishing on 199-3. Huge credit to Rogerstone who batted very well indeed in their innings but the Wanderers will rue the missed chance to get full bowling points from the game.
