Student aims to tackle period poverty

A deputy senior prefect of Llantwit Major School, Izzy Thomas, 17, is working with the school to combat period poverty and she hopes to get more people talking about menstrual health and inequality.
Schools do have access to grants to support period poverty for students but when Izzy surveyed students in her school, she found that many were too embarrassed to ask for products. According to her survey, 34% of students in her school sometimes had concerns when accessing or paying for period products.
She said: “I hope that by getting students talking about periods we can normalise it for everyone.
“Without these sanitary products, some people who menstruate will be forced to miss work or school and potentially develop health problems.
”The Welsh Government ‘Period Dignity in Schools’ grant allows products to be made available to all learners in all schools, free of charge and accessible in the most practical and dignified way possible.
“Our school has lots of supplies of products, so we have been working to educate our students about where the products can be accessed but most importantly in supporting students to feel comfortable about talking about their bodies. I think it is important that our students feel empowered to talk about their bodies openly.”
The headteacher, Mr Burden, commented: “This is a vital project and I praise the passion of Izzy’s leadership. She and our students are making life better for the community.”
