Bissett’s brace gives Pencoed victory

As has been the case in recent matches, Pencoed again started well, creating a number of try-scoring chances in the early minutes.
Sustained pressure in the Pyle 22 saw Jack Bevan receive the ball out wide to burst over. Pyle responded well to threaten the home line, the Pencoed defence holding firm until Pyle opened their account with a penalty goal from outside half Wil Galavant.
Pyle were edging the territorial battle in the opening quarter but it was the home side who increased their lead. Scrum half Rhys Clarke took a quick penalty, fed Ashley Bissett on the burst and the No8 showed a good turn of pace from 40 metres out to score at the posts, Clarke converting.
Pyle once again hit back, only a fine tackle from home full back Tom Cross preventing a score. Pyle however, recycled possession and moved the ball wide for Lloyd Allan to cross in the corner. Just prior to the interval, Pencoed were held up over the line and the half time whistle sounded at 12-8. The Pyle scrum was beginning to pose problems for the home side, with most of their attacks coming from a slight advantage at the set.
Home flanker Tom Geere, who was enjoying a fine match, set up the all-important score in the overall context of the match, firstly charging down the attempted Pyle clearance before regathering to put Bissett over for his second try. Sam Hayman took over kicking duties from the departed Clarke to slot the conversion.
Pyle returned to the attack and were held up over the line by Bissett, outside half Bevan taking the pressure off with a drop out from under his posts close to halfway. The second half somewhat deteriorated with both sides finding it difficult to develop any continuity in the blustery conditions and Pencoed ran out 19 – 8 winners.
Ashley Bissett was chosen as Pencoed supporters’ man of the match, closely followed by Tom Geere in the vote. Thanks are expressed from Pencoed to permit players Adam O’Driscoll, Tom Jenkins, and Ethan Williams and their respective clubs Heol y Cyw, Llanharan, and Pentyrch for their help.
