A THREE-TRY blitz in the opening 15 minutes by unbeaten league leaders Barry, two from powerful left wing Fin Burrows and one from centre George Strong, set the pattern for this clash of the top and bottom clubs. Five wins from five for the Bombers, five defeats for the visitors.
But, having come out of the blocks at speed, Barry moved away from the game plan, became a little individual, and a brief scrappy spell followed.
However, the lineout and scrum, which functioned well all game, came to the fore later in the half with No 8 Max O’Sullivan picking up and going blind off the back of an advancing scrum to secure the bonus point before the interval. Outside half Marley Paines-Lang converted three of the tries for a 26-0 lead.
Barry made multiple changes for the second half, and initially looked a bit disjointed, but were soon back in control with hooker Jensen Wilding scoring from a driving maul. There were further scores from Paines-Lang and centre Lloyd Beer, before Pentyrch replied with one of their own.
The last word went to under-16s replacement prop Josh Welsh, who crowned his first taste of Youth rugby with the eighth and final try, following a length of the field break from Paines-Lang, with Beer on hand to link up and supply the final pass. Paines-Lang ended with six conversions.
“The scrum and lineout were outstanding throughout,” said head coach Peter O’Sullivan, “and when they clicked the back line showed just how good they can be. But we will need to be better next week and stick to the plan from start to end with a strong Newport HSOB team coming to the Reservoir Field for the first round of the National Cup.”
